Requirements

To meet the basic qualifications for this role you will need a high school diploma or equivalent. However, the most important competencies you'll need to succeed as a Senior Project Manager will be the following:

Role Overview

You’ll join a team of twelve Project Managers as an individual contributor, but with a strong team dynamic. Estimating and Sales bring in the jobs, and the Senior Operations Manager assigns them out to the Project Managers. Then you plan and staff projects assigned to you, working through the managers who are responsible for the areas from which you need to draw resources. Your goal is to coordinate everything around the project, including setting milestones to meet the deadline, and you’ll be ultimately responsible for the project completion on time and within budget.

While you’ll have authority to make demands upon, direct, delegate to and utilize all available resources as required, you will need to keep in mind that the most important goal is that all projects are completed on time, not just yours. For this reason, we have a strong team dynamic, with all Project Managers working together to meet the big picture needs, calling on each other’s strengths and resources, and ensuring the overall success of the organization. Projects can be small or large, simple or complex, and the experience and the skill you bring with you will determine the type of projects assigned to you. However, your aptitude, ability to learn, and desire to take advantage of opportunities will inform the type of projects you manage in the future.

The job entails both administrative and field work. You need to get on the job and walk it, and keep in close communication with the project team, checking in regularly to confirm everything stays on track. You will also meet with customers and/or regulatory agencies, such as the Coast Guard, ABS inspectors, etc., at the job site so they can inspect the work. In general, you’ll work business hours during the week, but it’s not uncommon to need to work a longer day here and there, or to work on a weekend when needed to take care of one of your projects.

Project Planning & Communication
  • The Senior Project Manager is responsible for full compliance with the Project Planning Procedure. Competent management of this procedure is critical to project success.
Project Control
  • Quality: Develop, manage and monitor an effective Quality Control Plan for each project. Ensure that customer, regulatory body and company quality control requirements are satisfied and that all required QC documentation is executed and filed as required.
  • Schedule: Develop and manage an effective Project Schedule for each project. Ensure that sufficient resources are applied and coordinated to meet project milestones. Ensure that the Project Schedule is monitored, controlled, adjusted as necessary and effectively used to accomplish earliest achievable completion.
  • Cost: Develop and monitor an effective Project Budget for each project. Manage projects so that they are accomplished as cost-efficiently as possible. Routinely monitor cost reports and make resource and timing adjustments as necessary to complete each project as required by the Project Budget.
Resource Management
  • Workforce: Ensure that each project is managed with optimum staffing of leads and workers, as available within the manpower system. Work with the Craft Assignment Manager to optimize the application of available resources.   • Equipment: Ensure that all projects are fully mobilized, supported and maintained in accordance with the Site Mobilization & Control Procedure. Minimize lost production time caused by lack of, failure of, or improper set-up of, equipment. Ensure that all tools and equipment are returned at completion.
  • Material/Subs: Work with Purchasing and vendors to ensure that all material and subcontractors are on site, when required, at optimum cost. Minimize lost production time caused by lack of, insufficient or inadequate material. Ensure that all subcontractors submit required insurance documentation prior to start.
Risk Management
  • Policies & Procedures: Monitor and control safety and environmental policies and procedures. Ensure that worksites, company personnel and vendors are routinely in compliance with company and government regulations.
Administrative Management
  • General Administration: Routinely accomplish, process & submit all required administrative tasks on time. This includes, but is not limited to, time cards, planning documents, QC documentation, contracts documents, CFR’s, safety reports, cost analysis reports and invoicing.
  • Contracts: Ensure that company contractual requirements are adhered to and accomplished on every project. Satisfy the obligations, terms and conditions under which the project is being performed. Manage projects such that potential growth is identified, priced and submitted to the customer in a timely manner.
Customer Management
  • Communication: The Senior Project Manager must routinely and thoroughly communicate project status, costs and all other relevant information to the customer.
  • Mission Statement: Ensure that Absolute Customer Satisfaction is achieved on every project; that every customer leaves the yard with full intention to return.
