The Shipyard Estimator has the potential, in conjunction with the project manager and account manager, to make sure that the customer’s experience in the yard meets or exceeds Bay Ship & Yacht’s mission statement of Absolute Customer Satisfaction.
The Shipyard Estimator reports to the Estimating & Contracts Manager of the company and is responsible for the development of detailed contract-related documents—such as scope of work (SOW), cost estimate, quotation, and proposal—at the initiation of a customer’s request for quote (RFQ).
The Shipyard Estimator Responsibilities are focused in the areas of Project Development, Project Initialization and Cost Accounting. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Work with the account manager and/or customer to define a detailed scope of work (SOW), cost estimate, and proposal for the projects.
- Develop contracts in accordance with BSY Procedures.
- Ensure that the SOW is accurately developed through ship checks, technical research, and/or internal resources.
- Prepare a detailed and accurate estimate of costs, including labor, materials, subcontracted personnel and services, and any other elements that affect the cost of the project.
- Potential travel to attend ship checks onboard vessels and/or mandatory bidder’s conference.
- Develop technical proposals that include technical requirements, past performance, and schedule requirements as needed.
- Ensure that documents submitted to customers are accurate, complete, well-written, and consistent with customer-specific pricing and credit rating.
- Assist the account manager as required to negotiate and finalize a contract with the customer.
- Ensure all contractual and risk management requirements are fulfilled. Assist account manager to collect required information from customer and to create and submit the BSY Ship Repair Contract Risk Package.
- Work with department administrator to prepare job packages, to include all documents created during the project development phase, for distribution to production.
- Assist with development and pricing of change orders (AWPs) as needed.
Qualifications include a B.S. degree in Engineering or similar discipline (or equivalent work experience), along with 3-4 years of practical experience in a related field. Successful candidates must possess a solid understanding of lean principles and continuous improvement processes. Proven experience in building relationships with cross-functional teams and the ability to adapt to different environments while interacting with a diverse group of individuals is critical. Project management experience is a plus, but not required. Excellent verbal communication skills as well as strong writing and presentation skills are critical to success in this position. We are seeking a creative and proactive problem solver with a demonstrated continuous drive for improvement and desire to learn.
